When typists hear a word, they can type it. If you hear a phrase, you should be able to play it. We all have different ways to get to that point, but that's where you have to be. This makes demands on your technique, but it's still only part of making good music. There are other things involved-another dimension that comes from within.

It isn't something you calculate. If you let methods control you, if you become preoccupied with them and think that you're going to throw in a scale because you kno it will work, that's not the high level of artistry we all strive for. Inexperienced musicians tend to throw in things they know will work technically, but that's not musical because it's being done in a calculated manner. Don't become so preoccupied that you can't play good music.

當打字員聽到一個字的時候,他們能把他打出來;如果你聽到一個樂句,你應該能把他彈出來。我們各自都有不同的方式來達到這個目標,那也是你必須要達到的。當然這會要求你在技巧上達到相當水準,但這只是創造好音樂的各項要求的一部分而已,除此之外還有其他事情要注意-從腦袋來看的另一個面向。

做好音樂並不是什麼算數之類的事情。如果你讓理論控制了你,如果你的腦袋被理論給預先佔據,並且想著說,你將要使用某個音階,是因為你知道這個音階可以用,那麼這並不是我們所有人在努力追求的高水準藝術。生澀的樂手往往會因為他知道某個東西在法則上是可行的,於是採用它,但這是缺乏音樂性的,因為這是被計算出來的結果。千萬不要被理論牽著鼻子走,那樣的你是彈不出什麼好音樂的。
